About the Book
L. M. Montgomery, best known for Anne of Green Gables, published The Blue Castle in 1926 as one of the only novels she wrote for an adult audience and her only one set outside Prince Edward Island. It’s set instead in Ontario, inspired by the real Muskoka region where Montgomery vacationed in 1922 to escape a difficult home life.
The story follows Valancy Stirling, twenty nine and unmarried, living under the thumb of a joyless, controlling extended family in the small town of Deerwood. Her only real escape is daydreaming about an imaginary “Blue Castle” of her own. Everything changes when a doctor misdiagnoses her with a fatal heart condition and gives her a year to live. Freed by the certainty of dying, Valancy stops caring what her family thinks, speaks her mind for the first time in her life, and takes a scandalous job as housekeeper for the town’s outcast and his dying daughter. During this period she grows close to Barney Snaith, a mysterious man with a shady reputation, and eventually proposes marriage to him herself, asking only for one genuinely happy year before she dies. He agrees, and the two move to his island cabin, where Valancy finally experiences the real version of the freedom she’d only imagined. Near the end of her supposed year, she survives a near drowning and learns the original diagnosis was simply wrong, around the same time she discovers Barney is secretly the wealthy son of her favorite nature writer.
The novel is really a story about rebellion and reclaiming a life, contrasting Valancy’s stifling, gossip-driven town with the freeing wilderness she finds with Barney. Montgomery, who struggled with clinical depression and chafed against the rigid social and religious expectations of her own life, poured a lot of that frustration into Valancy’s transformation.
The book faded from wide attention for decades but has built a passionate cult following in recent years, often read today as an early, satisfying feminist fairy tale about a woman who simply decides to stop living for other people’s approval.
