Stipendium Hungaricum: Navigating the Sending Partner

Getting shortlisted for Stipendium Hungaricum is only half the process. Because it runs on a bilateral agreement between Hungary and Nigeria, your file has to pass through a domestic “sending partner,” and this step is where many strong candidates lose time.

Current process:

  • Nomination by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education is mandatory before the Hungarian side reviews your application at all
  • The 2026/2027 online application closed 15 January 2026, sending partners then forwarded their nominations by the end of February, and the next intake cycle is expected to open around November 2026
  • Once nominated, host universities run entrance exams between mid-March and late May, and a score of at least 56 out of 100 is needed to make the final scholarship list

Because the nomination step sits inside a government ministry rather than a university admissions office, response times and communication can be slower and less predictable than the Hungarian portal itself. This is also where age and document requirements get checked early: you need to be at least 18 by 31 August of your intake year, and any document not already in English or Hungarian needs a notarised translation attached before nomination, not after.

Start engaging your institution’s international office and the Ministry’s nomination process early, and follow up on your nomination status directly rather than assuming silence means rejection. For the scholarship’s core terms, see Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship: Nigeria Nomination.
