About the Book
George Eliot, the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, published Middlemarch serially in eight volumes across 1871 and 1872. Eliot reportedly built the sprawling novel by fusing two separate manuscripts she’d been stuck on individually, one about a provincial doctor and another about an ambitious young woman, into a single interwoven narrative.
Set in the fictional English town of Middlemarch between 1829 and 1832, against the backdrop of looming political reform, the novel follows several interconnected lives. Dorothea Brooke, idealistic and hungry for a life of real purpose, disastrously marries the much older scholar Edward Casaubon, who turns out to be cold and intellectually hollow, and who grows jealous of her friendship with his younger cousin Will Ladislaw. After Casaubon dies leaving a spiteful will that cuts Dorothea off if she marries Ladislaw, the story turns to Dr. Tertius Lydgate, a progressive young physician whose promising career gets derailed by his marriage to the materialistic Rosamond Vincy, whose expensive tastes push him into serious debt. Rosamond’s brother Fred, meanwhile, has to grow up and prove himself worthy of the sensible Mary Garth. A subplot involving a hypocritical local banker’s hidden past eventually threatens to drag Lydgate down by association, until Dorothea steps in to clear his name. In the end, Dorothea gives up Casaubon’s fortune to marry Ladislaw for love, Fred earns a real career to win Mary, and Lydgate settles into a smaller, more compromised life in London.
The novel is really an extended meditation on how big ambitions get worn down by ordinary provincial life and human flaws, paired with an unusually clear eyed look at marriage as an institution, showing the quiet friction inside unhappy unions rather than romanticizing them. Eliot used a male pseudonym specifically so her work would be judged on its merits rather than her gender, and her own unconventional life, living openly with a married man, gave her an outsider’s sharp eye on provincial morality and hypocrisy.
Critics including Virginia Woolf have called it the greatest novel in the English language, largely for how it pioneered psychological and sociological realism, pulling the Victorian novel away from melodrama and toward something closer to how people actually think and compromise.
