About the Book
Alexandre Dumas published The Count of Monte Cristo as a serial in the Paris newspaper Le Journal des Débats, running in installments from August 1844 to January 1846. Dumas worked closely with Auguste Maquet, who researched history and drafted plot outlines that Dumas then rewrote in his own voice. Since Dumas was paid by the line, there was every incentive to stretch the story with subplots and cliffhangers, which helps explain its enormous length. It reached English readers almost immediately, with the 1846 Chapman and Hall translation becoming the standard version.
The story follows Edmond Dantès, a young sailor in Marseille on the verge of a happy life, engaged to be married and just promoted to captain, when jealous rivals frame him as a Bonapartist traitor. A prosecutor who realizes Dantès is innocent imprisons him anyway to protect his own family’s secrets, and Dantès spends fourteen years in the island prison of the Château d’If. There he meets a fellow prisoner who educates him and reveals the location of a hidden fortune. After escaping and claiming the treasure, Dantès reinvents himself as the wealthy, mysterious Count of Monte Cristo and spends years methodically dismantling the lives of the men who destroyed his.
The novel is less interested in whether Dantès succeeds than in whether he should. As his revenge starts hurting people who had nothing to do with his imprisonment, the story turns into a real argument about whether any person has the right to act as judge and executioner, even against people who deserve punishment. It’s this moral tension, layered under disguise, fortune, and betrayal, that turned the book into one of the most widely translated adventure novels ever written and effectively invented the modern revenge thriller template still used today.
Dumas based Dantès’s imprisonment and revenge loosely on a real police case involving a shoemaker named Pierre Picaud, who was falsely imprisoned by envious friends, inherited a fortune, and took his own revenge after release. Maquet, meanwhile, later sued Dumas over credit and royalties. He lost the right to be named co-author but won a substantial financial settlement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is The Count of Monte Cristo free to download?
Yes. Both Dumas (died 1870) and Maquet (died 1888) have been gone well over 70 years, and the standard 1846 English translation is also long out of copyright.
Was the story based on a true story?
Loosely. Dumas drew on a real French police file about a wrongly imprisoned shoemaker who inherited a fortune and took revenge on the friends who betrayed him.
Did Dumas write it alone?
No. Auguste Maquet supplied historical research and plot structure, though Dumas wrote the final prose, dialogue, and pacing that give the novel its voice.
