About the Book

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was printed in a 1597 quarto edition, adapted from Arthur Brooke’s 1562 narrative poem The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet. Shakespeare compressed Brooke’s original nine month timeline down to roughly four frantic days, which is a large part of why the play feels so breathless and rushed toward its ending.

Set in Verona, the play opens with the Montague and Capulet families locked in a violent, long-running feud. Romeo, a Montague, sneaks into a Capulet party and falls instantly for Juliet, the daughter of his family’s enemy. They marry secretly the next day with the help of Friar Laurence, who hopes the union might end the feud. Everything unravels when Juliet’s cousin Tybalt kills Romeo’s friend Mercutio in a street fight, and Romeo kills Tybalt in revenge, earning banishment from the city. With Romeo gone and her father forcing her into a marriage with someone else, Juliet fakes her own death using a potion from the Friar, but the message meant to warn Romeo never reaches him. Believing her truly dead, Romeo kills himself at her tomb, and Juliet wakes to find him dead beside her, choosing to take her own life rather than live without him.

The play treats young love as an overwhelming force that outweighs family loyalty, law, and self-preservation, while constantly reminding the audience that the lovers are “star-crossed,” fated to fail no matter what they do. It also sets up a generational contrast: the reckless urgency of Romeo and Juliet against the stubborn, long-simmering grudges of their parents, who only reconcile once their children are dead.

One detail that surprises many readers: the text never actually specifies that the famous scene between Romeo and Juliet happens on a balcony. That staging convention came later; Shakespeare’s original stage direction only places Juliet at a window.

Not according to the text. Shakespeare’s original stage directions only place Juliet at a window; the balcony staging came from later productions.
