About the Book

Charlotte Brontë published Jane Eyre in 1847 under the male pseudonym “Currer Bell,” a common strategy for women writers seeking an unbiased reading. Her publisher had no idea Currer Bell was actually a woman until Charlotte and her sister Anne showed up at his office in person to prove it.

The novel follows Jane, an orphan who survives a childhood of abuse at the hands of her cruel aunt before being sent to a grim charity school, where she loses her closest friend to illness but eventually becomes a teacher. Seeking independence, she takes a governess position at Thornfield Hall, where she falls for her brooding, secretive employer, Mr. Rochester. He proposes despite the gap in their social standing, but on their wedding day it’s revealed he’s already married to a violently mentally ill woman he’s kept hidden in the attic for years. Refusing to become his mistress, Jane flees penniless and is eventually taken in by a clergyman who, in a twist, turns out to be her cousin, alongside the discovery that she’s inherited a fortune. When he pressures her into a loveless marriage and a missionary posting in India, she refuses, drawn back instead to Rochester. She returns to find Thornfield burned down by his first wife, who died in the fire, and Rochester left blind and injured. Now financially independent, Jane marries him on her own terms.

The novel is essentially a demand for female autonomy, insisting on a woman’s right to intellectual and emotional equality in love rather than dependence. It also draws a sharp line between hypocritical, punishing religion and Jane’s own compassionate, personal moral compass. Brontë drew directly on her own bleak experience at a harsh charity school and her frustrating years as a governess to shape Jane’s story.

Its deeply personal, first person narration was a genuine innovation for its time, laying groundwork for literary psychology and establishing the novel as a foundational text of feminist literature.
