About the Book

Arthur Conan Doyle originally published these twelve Sherlock Holmes stories individually in The Strand Magazine between July 1891 and June 1892, before they were collected into a single volume. Doyle actually grew tired of writing Holmes fairly quickly and started demanding unreasonably high fees from The Strand, hoping they’d refuse and let him move on to other work. Instead, the magazine kept paying, making him one of the highest earning authors of his era.

The collection introduces the now iconic partnership between the brilliant, eccentric consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and his loyal friend and chronicler Dr. Watson, working out of their shared rooms at 221B Baker Street. Each story is self contained: in “A Scandal in Bohemia,” Holmes is famously outwitted by the opera singer Irene Adler, the only person ever shown to beat him. “The Red-Headed League” follows an elaborate scheme involving a fake society for red-haired men that turns out to be a cover for a bank robbery being dug from underground. “The Speckled Band” has Holmes save a young woman from a murder plot involving a trained venomous snake. Across the stories, Holmes repeatedly demonstrates his method of reading a person’s occupation or history from small physical details, like the wear on their sleeves or mud on their boots, well before they say a word.

Doyle based Holmes’s method directly on a real person, his own university professor Dr. Joseph Bell, who could diagnose a patient’s condition and background just from careful observation before they described any symptoms. The stories champion logic and empirical reasoning as tools that can restore order to a chaotic world, while also showing Holmes repeatedly bending or ignoring official police procedure in favor of what he sees as true justice, tapping into very real late-Victorian anxieties about crime and anonymity in a rapidly growing London.

This particular collection is what turned Holmes into a global phenomenon, effectively creating the modern detective genre template and making him the most adapted literary character in film and television history.
