Sometimes you encounter a textbook that just… sticks around. Lamlad Mathematics is one of those books for me.
Published back in 1999 by Ajaja, JO Ajayi, and AB Fagbohun, this book has that rare quality of aging gracefully. Twenty-five years later, and it’s still sitting on shelves across Nigerian schools. Still being recommended. Still making sense of mathematical concepts that haven’t changed much since, well, forever.
Here’s what caught my attention from the very beginning.
The scope is almost breathtaking when you really look at it. Numbers and arithmetic – the foundation stuff. But then it builds. Ratio, proportions, averages. The kind of practical math you actually use in real life.
Indices and logarithms? They move into territory that separates the confident from the confused. Surds and sets with those Venn diagrams that either click immediately or leave you staring at circles wondering what just happened.
Then comes the algebra. Expressions, quadratic equations, simultaneous equations. Each concept building on the last like steps you can’t skip.
But here’s where it gets interesting for me.
The way they handle graphs and rational expressions alongside inequalities? It’s not just theoretical. These concepts connect. Flow into sequences and series. Create patterns you can actually see.
The geometry section – lines, triangles, polygons, circles – feels comprehensive without being overwhelming. Trigonometry gets the space it deserves. Mensuration and bearings bridge the gap between classroom math and real-world applications.
And latitude and longitude? Construction problems? Logic, statistics, probability? This isn’t just a math book. It’s a toolkit.
I’ve used this book for several years now, and here’s what stands out.
It was originally designed for 100 level students, but honestly? It works beautifully for WAEC, JAMB, and POST-UTME preparation. The concepts don’t suddenly become easier or harder depending on your level. Math is math.
What I love most are those revision checklists under each chapter. Not just random summaries, but carefully curated concepts, definitions, formulas, and experiments. The things you actually need to be familiar with. Not everything that could possibly be important, but everything that definitely is important.
The UTME past questions with complete solutions? Game-changer. Because seeing the right answer is one thing. Understanding how to get there consistently? That’s something else entirely.
Those True or False questions under each chapter are genius.
They force you to confront your assumptions. To really think about fundamental concepts instead of just memorizing procedures. Sharp thinking leads to sharp problem-solving.
The twenty chapters of complete revision notes covering both WASSCE and UTME syllabuses? It’s comprehensive coverage that actually makes sense. Not just broad, but deep where it needs to be.
Little wonder different schools across the country are using it.
There’s something to be said for longevity in education. Books that survive decades of curriculum changes usually do so for good reasons. They work. They make sense. They help students actually learn, not just pass exams.
Though honestly, passing exams is important too.

For English language support alongside your math preparation, A1 In English provides that foundational understanding that helps across all subjects.
And if you’re interested in science integration, Lamlad Chemistry offers the same systematic approach to chemical concepts.
