JAMB: No Direct Entry Admission Without Certificate Verification

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that it will only process Direct Entry (DE) admission for the 2023 academic session if verifying the certificates of the candidates who applied through the Advanced Level mode.

The Board made this known in a statement published on its official X page on Friday, urging the candidates to contact their previous institutions for the verification of their certificates as soon as possible1.

According to the statement, JAMB had written to all the tertiary institutions that awarded the certificates to the candidates, and while many of them responded positively, some were not cooperative12.

The statement read in part: “This is to inform all A-Level candidates who applied for 2023 admissions through Direct Entry (DE) to reach out to their former institutions for prompt verification of their certificates.

“To facilitate the verification process, the Board wrote to all tertiary institutions that issued the certificates, and a good number of them responded favorably, while others were indifferent.

“Kindly note that the Board will not process any DE admission without certificate verification and that the admission exercise for the academic year will soon be concluded.

“Consequently, the Board will not accommodate any affected candidates from non-responsive institutions for admissions for the academic year.”12

The examination body also provided a link for the candidates to access the list of non-responsive institutions.

Can I apply for direct entry without JAMB?

Direct Entry is a mode of admission into Nigerian universities that allows candidates to gain admission into the 200 level without writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)3. To be eligible for Direct Entry, candidates must have a minimum of Lower Credit in a relevant National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), or Advanced Level (A’level) qualification34.

However, candidates who wish to apply for Direct Entry must still obtain the JAMB Direct Entry form and register with the Board3. This is because JAMB is the body that regulates and coordinates the admission process for all tertiary institutions in Nigeria3. Therefore, candidates cannot apply for Direct Entry without JAMB.
